Maintenance strategy

A key objective of Strategic Asset Management is to maintain the Asset so as to ensure it performs at the desired level of performance to meet Business Requirements.

Business Requirements are not just functionality; they also include equipment targets such as availability, reliability, productivity, safety and cost.
To achieve this, the relevant equipment Maintenance Strategy must consider the necessary maintenance required to align the inherent design properties of the equipment and its intended use or application – an "Application-based" maintenance strategy.
Application-based maintenance strategy primary objective is to preserve system function to desired standards of performance. The maintenance program must therefore focus on:
  • Preserving equipment functionality
  • Identifying failure modes that stop functionality
  • Understand how the application influences failure modes
  • Understand the equipment design limitations
  • Selecting the most appropriate maintenance technique
The effectiveness of the Maintenance Strategy is dependent upon the level of input and commitment to its content. It therefore should be practical and realistic, with all key stakeholders involved in its implementation, in particular the relevant maintenance practises and capabilities.
